about

On 23/09/19 at about 12 (CEST) a cardboard box was found at the front door of our studio. The only information on the box (handwriting all caps) was a small code (A.D. 2020) and the cryptic warning "KEEP AWAY FROM MAGNETIC FIELDS". As we opened the box a smell of old attic spread like if the content was sealed in there since forever. Inside the box we found 12 dusty folders, each including a variable number of magnetic tape spools and disparate items (paper material, prints, photographs, VHS tapes...). The puzzling findings unfold a high degree of space-time discrepancy, with dates, locations and names that don't add up, certainly leaving the awareness of being faced with a very strange puzzle, way too elaborate to be a joke, too full of meanings to be a fake. Unable to tell what it was, we decided to start an archive to catalog and publish the content of the box, one folder at the time. We called it: Dust Archive.

What follows is the content of the twelfth folder
Dust Archive protocol code: D.A. #012 - A.D. 2020

∙ [SP#041] to [SP#043] spools of tape
∙ [IT#027] black and white abstract print
∙ [IT#028] sheet of paper, containing notes handwritten with a black
ballpen. Transcription follows:

"On 27th August 1883 the island of Krakatoa,
between the islands of Java and Sumatra,
blew itself out of existence with an explosion
with the equivalent power of 10,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs.
In the previous weeks spiders have begun to leave the island,
lifted by the electric currents, ballooning into convection streams,
airborne between islands separated by miles of sea.
This astounding way of traveling at first surprised me, till I realized:
don't we do the same,
constantly shifting between realities
separated by seas of causality?"

∙ [IT#029] small round mirror; this last item is the most unique artifact of the lot, appearing to be a one of a kind "fractal mirror", displaying the image of the viewer in a tree-like pattern
